Scoping Made Affordable
(SMA)
Step Three - Getting Ready to Work
3.  Marketing Yourself, Determining Your Rates
and Working with Your First Reporter
Guidance in putting your scoping information letter together and how to go about finding court
reporters will be covered.  SMA will proofread your marketing information so you can be sure
you are promoting yourself in the best light possible.

Rarely do I have to market my scoping services anymore.  The court reporters come to me
asking if I am available or not.
1.  File Transfer Information
Information will be provided to you so that you can easily know how to
download and upload files.  Sometimes we have to help court reporters with
this process.

4.  Proofreading Your Work/Scoping Internship - A working internship is in the process of evolving.
SMA will proofread a sample transcript that you will edit on your CAT program and provide you specific feedback on things
you'll need to watch out for.  This is vitally important because scopists need to listen for the tiniest details and utterances.
Throughout SMA's experience it's been found that if you do not have SMA proofread a practice transcript before taking the
final scoping exam, you will probably not pass the exam which is a requirement of passing the course.
This part of SMA's training program makes this training unique.  This will be the key to your success!!
2.  CAT Training
Training via both written material and phone conversations will help you learn these
programs easily, regardless of the program you choose.

Understanding how CAT programs work is essential for your success.  And
understanding the many incredible functions of the programs will make your
proficiency increase.
SMA will assist you in maneuvering around the document, changing formatting,
suffixes and prefixes with quick efficient strokes, and have a strong knowledge in
making accurate dictionary entries.  The dictionary is essentially the spine or the
backbone of the program.
Individual course prices are still available but that is not how SMA views
this training process.  It is more by each section at a time.
5.  How to Research
Learning how to get the most of your time in researching terminology, formatting, and ways to build your
research resources is a must to know as you work in the scoping field.  If you can be patient with the techniques
taught, you will likely
reduce the amount of time spent doing research.

6.  Working with Preference Sheets
What is a preference sheet and how do we use them is covered thoroughly.  It is also an excellent learning tool.

7.  Taxes, Billing and Sample Invoices
Some basic tips of managing and operating your own business along with how to bill your customers and
sample invoices will be provided to you.
Conference calls will continue to be a part of your training
regardless of how long you want to attend them.
They are always a great source of information
and will empower your business!!
