The Art of Listening in Scoping

If you haven't been taught how to listen for the tiny details involved in scoping, please take note of the suggestions I am
providing below.  They are critical in doing work with videotaped files.
1.  Listen for trail offs at the end of each question and answer.
2.  If you hear the attorney say "okay" or "all right" as their verbal receipt of the answer, learn to listen for those in all of
the dialogue.  People tend to do the same thing in their dialogue.
3.  Listen for the little "okay" that many people utter when receiving deposition instruction.
In doing videotape work, we
have to get every word that is spoken.
4.  When a person says a phonetic sound that does not constitute an actual word, that is the one thing that can be left out.
For instance, if the speaker said "hap."  Well, "hap" is not a word.  Because of that, we do not put those situations in the
dialogue.
5.  Use parentheticals for any sounds that interrupt the dialogue.
Learn and practice so that you'll be
confident in your skills!!

About Marketing:
For those of you who continue to market your scoping skills on a constant basis, (meaning once a
month) unfortunately, all that you are telling the world is that you are unable to keep a reporter
because your scoping skills are not developed.  My heart just aches when I continue to see new
scopists doing that.  Even those who have tested with Joyful Leads and did not pass.

If you are one of those individuals, please contact me about the Scoping Intern Program.  I was once
in your shoes and I know how it feels:  Absolutely horrifying and truly disappointing.
The ultimate problem you have right now is that you don't know what you don't know.
And that can be critical in keeping your next court reporter.  So why wait another day where there is an
overabundance of work available?!  Sign up today by following this link:

Why do court reporters want their
               work checked with audio?

I have a lot of respect for court reporters because
they are under a lot of pressure to take the spoken
word down correctly.  Since most of us speak at a
rapid pace, oftentimes changing directions midway --
as I have just done -- their fingers and brain have to
work together to take it all down.
Most court reporters who know their physical
limitations do require a scopist to scope with audio
because they want their work to be as accurate and
clearly understood as possible.  Their audio is not a
crutch.  It simply helps them to do their job in the
best manner possible.
Videotaped files are frequently edited by scopists
because they are cases of major consequence so the
audio has to be listened to.  SMA is the only training
program making sure its graduates know how to
complete this kind of work with confidence!!

Recent graduates from other training programs are
amazed by how much information the Scoping Intern
Program (SIP) provides for them once they have
enrolled.
In many instances, since few people even know what
scoping is, new graduates don't know what they don't
know.
